Claude or ChatGPT: which one for what (September 2026)
OpenAI released GPT 6 Astra on September 3, 2026. Here's what the public scoreboards say, and what I'm doing about it.
The numbers, from Artificial Analysis, checked September 8: Claude Fable 5.1 scores 53 on the Intelligence Index, first of 202 models. GPT 6 Astra scores 53, third of 202. Both cost $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Both have a 1M token context window. Claude answers faster: 69.4 tokens a second against 56.5.
ARC AGI 3, from ARC Prize, September 3: Astra scored 62.7% for $26,098 on the standard harness and 99.9% for $18,817 on the provider adapter harness. It used fewer actions than people on 96% of levels. ARC Prize calls that a step change, not proof of AGI.
What OpenAI says it's good at, in its own launch video: "In particular, it excels at building 3D models."
My rule:
1. Writing, planning, everyday questions: stay where your history and memory already live. For me that's Claude.
2. 3D models, or a task Claude keeps failing: try Astra once and compare the two answers side by side.
3. Don't pay twice for the same score. Pick one, learn it deep.
