Your Claude is guessing 🎯
From @techyai_cj. There's one text box that changes every answer you'll ever get, and most people leave it blank. This is what to actually write in it, plus the prompt that writes it for you.
01 · What the box actually does
Whatever you put in your profile gets read before every conversation you ever have. It's the difference between advice written for the average internet user and advice written for you. Blank box, generic answers. Every time.
WHERE: your initials, then Settings, then Profile.
02 · The three things worth including
What you do: job, level, tools you actually touch. This sets vocabulary and how much it explains.
What you're working on right now: the one or two real things. This is the part almost everyone skips and it's the part that makes answers feel like they were written for you.
How you want to be talked to: answer first or reasoning first, long or short, examples or explanations, whether you want to be told when you're wrong.
03 · Steal mine
This is the shape that works. Keep it short. A wall of text here makes it worse, not better.
Copy and edit:
I'm [name], a [job] working mostly in [tools/areas]. Right now I'm focused on [one or two current things]. How I want answers: lead with the answer, then a short why. Short paragraphs, no filler, no motivational language. Show me an example instead of explaining at length. If what I'm asking for is a bad idea, say so directly and tell me what to do instead. Assume I'll ask if I want more depth.
04 · Don't want to write it? Don't.
This is the one nobody knows about. Claude asks better questions about your setup than you'd think to ask yourself.
Paste into a fresh chat:
Interview me so you can write my Claude profile. Ask me five short questions, one at a time, and wait for each answer: what I do, what I'm working on right now, how I like information explained, what annoys me about AI answers, and what I'll mostly use you for. Then write a short first-person profile I can paste straight into my settings.
05 · Prove it worked
Pick a question you've already asked before. Ask it again in a fresh chat after you've filled the box in. The difference is the whole point, and if there isn't one, your profile is probably too vague. Add the specific current-project line.
TIP: put anything ongoing into a Project instead. Project instructions apply only inside that Project, so they can be far more specific than your global profile.
Free plan does all of this.
One thing to avoid: don't write a life story. Three or four sharp lines beat a paragraph, because everything in there competes for attention with your actual question.
I'm a software developer and I post what I actually use every day.
