Set up Claude the right way 🧭

From @techyai_cj. Five things to do in your first five minutes with Claude, before you ask it anything. This is the difference between generic answers and answers that fit you. Works on the free plan.

01 · Tell it who you are

the single biggest upgrade, one text box

Open Settings, find the profile section where it asks what Claude should know about you, and actually fill it out. Your job, what you're working on, how you like answers. Every future chat reads this first.

WHERE: tap your initials, then Settings, then Profile. The box is called something like "What should Claude know about you".

My template, edit the brackets:

I'm [name], a [job]. Right now I'm working on [the one or two things you're actually doing]. Answer me like a sharp friend: direct, short paragraphs, no filler. Lead with the answer, then the why. Show me an example instead of a long explanation. If my idea is bad or risky, say so plainly.

02 · Turn on memory

so it stops meeting you for the first time every day

With memory on, Claude carries what it learns about you across chats. You stop re explaining your situation at the start of every conversation.

WHERE: Settings, then look for Memory and switch it on. Later you can literally ask "what do you remember about me" and it will tell you.

03 · Make a Project for anything ongoing

files go in once, then you stop repeating yourself

A Project is a folder with its own instructions and files. Job hunt, side business, class, trip planning. Drop the files in one time and every chat inside that Project already knows everything.

WHERE: Projects in the sidebar, then New Project. Put instructions in the Project so they only apply there, not everywhere.

04 · Look at which model you're on

most people never tap this once

There is more than one model in there, and next to the name there's a setting for how much effort it puts in before it answers. Beginners run everything on whatever was already selected, get an average answer, and decide Claude is average. The quick model is for quick questions. Anything you actually care about, put it on the strongest one your plan gives you.

WHERE: tap the model name at the top of your chat, or next to the message box on a computer. Tap More models to see the whole list.

05 · The prompt that does step one for you

the one from the video

Don't want to write your own profile? Make Claude interview you and write it. It asks better questions than you would ask yourself.

Interview me so you can set up my Claude profile. Ask me five short questions, one at a time: what I do, what I'm working on right now, how I like information explained, what annoys me about AI answers, and what I'll mostly use you for. Then write a short first person profile I can paste into my settings under what Claude should know about me.

Free plan is fine for all five of these. If you upgrade later, paid plans mostly buy you more usage and the strongest models, but none of this setup changes.

Bonus if you're on a computer: there's a style picker next to the message box, and switching it to Concise stops Claude writing you a textbook every time. It's easy to miss on a phone.

I'm a software developer and I post what I actually use every day.
